Challenge: Detecting modern fraud beyond calls and SMS

Digital fraud has evolved rapidly in recent years. Beyond scam calls and SMS, fraudsters increasingly use AI-generated images, voice messages, screenshots, and printed materials to deceive users.

A survey conducted in February 2025 showed that 96.8% of Taiwanese users had received scam messages, while 32.8% encountered scam images or AI-generated voices. These emerging formats made fraud detection more complex and harder for everyday users to assess.

With over a decade of experience in fraud prevention, Gogolook set out to enhance its consumer-facing tools to help users identify fraud risks in real-world scenarios, not just on phone calls.

Solution: AI-powered fraud detection through image analysis

To address this challenge, Gogolook introduced Content Checker, a new feature within Whoscall, its flagship anti-fraud mobile app.

With Content Checker, users can:

  • Upload screenshots of suspicious messages
  • Take photos of physical flyers or printed material
  • Receive a fraud risk assessment within seconds
The solution leverages the AI capabilities of Google Cloud:
  • Document AI extracts text from images submitted by users
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro on Vertex AI analyses the extracted content and compares it against known fraud patterns
  • Risk assessment results are delivered to users in approximately five seconds
During evaluation, Gemini 2.5 Pro demonstrated superior speed, consistency, and cost efficiency compared to other large language models, making it suitable for real-time consumer use cases.

Our role: Accelerating development and time to market

As a Google Cloud partner, Gaia Information Technology supported Gogolook throughout the development of Content Checker.

Gaia worked closely with Gogolook to:

  • Advice on AI model and service selection

  • Build automated testing pipelines

  • Optimise performance for different usage scenarios

  • Monitor inference accuracy and system performance

This collaboration enabled Gogolook to shorten its development cycle and bring the AI-powered feature to market more quickly.

Following its launch in mid-2024:

  • Content Checker delivered fraud risk assessments in approximately five seconds
  • Usage grew five times after rollout
  • The feature expanded beyond Taiwan into Thailand and the Philippines
Users can now proactively assess suspicious content and take preventive action before falling victim to scams.

Looking ahead: Expanding AI-powered fraud prevention

Building on the success of Content Checker, Gogolook plans to:

  • Expand the feature to more markets
  • Explore Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech AI to develop voice-related features
