The logic is straightforward: shorter lifespans force more frequent key rotation, which shrinks the window for a stolen or cracked certificate to do damage. They also give the industry a built-in mechanism for upgrading cryptography — when an encryption standard needs retiring, a shorter certificate lifespan means every website on the internet is forced to catch up quickly, rather than lingering on outdated algorithms for years.

Q1:How short will certificate lifespans actually get? 

Quite a bit shorter than most people expect. Google first proposed cutting lifespans to 90 days; Apple later pushed for an even more aggressive, phased reduction. After a formal vote, the CA/B Forum settled on a final target: 47 days

Q2:When does this take effect?

The rule has already passed a CA/B Forum vote, and it's being rolled out gradually rather than all at once. Between 2026 and 2029, businesses will need to move away from manually renewing certificates and toward automated certificate lifecycle management — manual processes simply won't keep up with how often renewals will be required.

Q3:What's the actual timeline?

The CA/B Forum's phased rollout brings maximum certificate validity down in stages: 

 

September 2020: Validity cut from 2 years to the current 398 days.
March 2023: Google formally proposes a 90-day standard.
March 15, 2026: Maximum validity for new certificates drops to 200 days.
March 15, 2027: Maximum validity drops again, to 100 days.
March 15, 2029: The final target takes effect — maximum validity of 47 days.

 

 

What Is an SSL/TLS Certificate, and How Do You Check One? 

An SSL/TLS certificate (Secure Sockets Layer / Transport Layer Security) is a digital credential installed on a web server. It does two jobs: encrypting sensitive data — credit card numbers, passwords — as it moves between browser and server, and verifying that the site is actually who it claims to be, rather than a phishing lookalike.

You can tell a certificate is in place because the URL starts with https:// instead of http://. Checking a certificate's own validity takes three steps:
